Support Center Workflows High-fidelity remote voiceover

A remote booth, on your timeline.

How to record high-fidelity remote voiceover sessions using Source-Connect Studio, with the performer’s microphone arriving live on a track in your DAW.

The voice you booked is not the voice you got

You are the engineer, the session is in an hour, and the performer is a long way from your room. A video call would get you a voice you can direct and a recording you cannot use: browser conferencing compresses what it sends, and what it takes out of a voice does not come back in the mix.

This is the other way round. The performer runs Source-Connect Talent, you run Source-Connect Studio, and their microphone feed arrives on a dedicated record track in your DAW — full-frequency, at low latency, with your talkback going back the other way. You direct the read as if they were down the hall, and what lands on the timeline is production audio.

Before you start

Eight steps, in order

  1. Build the routing path. In your DAW, create a mono aux track named SC and insert the Source-Connect I/O plugin on it. Leave the plugin’s default settings and levels alone, and put no insert after it.
  2. Send the aux to a record track. Route the SC aux output through a mono bus to a mono audio track named Record, so that exactly what leaves the Source-Connect I/O plugin is what gets recorded. Never route the Record track’s output back into the SC aux: that is a feedback loop.
  3. Feed talkback into the aux. Set your push-to-talk talkback microphone as the input to the SC aux track. Playback tracks can be routed to the same aux input if the performer needs to hear them.
  4. Point Restore and Replace at the record folder. In Source-Connect Studio, open the Auto Restore / Auto Replace tab and then Settings, and set the watch folder to the exact folder your DAW records into. In Pro Tools there is an option to find that folder automatically, for a session whose tracks share one disk allocation path.
  5. Set the audio devices at both ends. At the performer’s end, open Source-Connect Talent and set the input to their microphone and the output to their headphones. At yours, open Source-Connect Studio or Facility and set both input and output to use the Source-Connect I/O plugin.
  6. Add the performer, then connect. Log in at source-elements.com, go to My Contacts, then Add New Contact from Directory, search for the performer’s handle and add them. With both of you logged in to Source-Connect, select them from your contacts and click Connect, leaving Auto Restore and Auto Replace enabled.
  7. Record the take. Arm the Record track, take a level check with the performer, and record. As they read, their microphone feed lands on that track. When the take is done, open the Auto Restore / Replace tab, click the current session on the left, and check the middle panel: the take should be listed within a few seconds, longer for a long take.
  8. Replace at the end of the session. Before you disconnect, ask the performer to stay online in Source-Connect. Open the small menu beside the session in the left panel of the Restore / Replace tab and select Replace All. That fetches the uncompressed PCM audio from the performer’s own converter and conforms the edits you have already made to it.

How you know it worked

  • The Record track carries the performer’s microphone and nothing else — no talkback, no playback, no plugin between the stream and the disk.
  • You can talk to the performer and they can hear you, and doing so puts nothing on the record track.
  • The take appears in the middle panel of the Restore / Replace tab shortly after you stop, so the recovery path is live and not just enabled.
  • After Replace All, the timeline holds the uncompressed audio from the performer’s own converter, with your edits conformed to it — no file to send, receive or re-conform.

The things that actually go wrong

Each one has a support article under it. Open these with the session still live, not afterwards.

Echo, or a feedback loop

The cause the procedure warns about is the Record track’s output finding its way back into the SC aux. Nothing should feed the aux except your talkback and, if you want it, playback. Check the input and output assignments at the application end too.

Nothing arrives on the record track

The connection can be live while the DAW is recording silence, because these are two separate routings. Support publishes the record-incoming-signal procedure per DAW — start with the one you are actually in.

You cannot get connected at all

A session that will not start is usually an account and contacts question rather than an audio one. The 1-1 session article walks the connection itself, and the getting-started page covers the first run.
